Summer in the Rose Garden

Our informal summer meetings are starting up again! They take place the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at the gazebo in the Rose Garden in Queens Park, New Westminster, B.C. (map). If we get there and discover that the Rose Garden is unavailable, we move the meeting over to the picnic tables (see the map for Picnic Shelter #1 and Picnic Shelter #2).

Our first Rose Garden meeting for 2016 will be on July 14th, at 10:30 a.m. We hope to see you there!

  1. I never seem to get away in time to drop into your group so am hoping that by posting a question, someone can help me get properly set up.
I am a complete newbie, having cobbled together a small starting kit to have a go at some utube lessons, and am having no luck finding a local supplier of bobbins. (old fashioned clothes pegs really aren’t the best option)
Can you suggest somewhere local, or are all supplies sourced from the USA /UK?
Many Thanks for your time and any help received here.
    Sue

  2. Hi Sue:

Getting the right bobbins made a tremendous difference to me when I started (also, a proper pillow – a piece of Styrofoam, Ethafoam, or building insulation is OK to begin with, but a rolled-up feather bed pillow absolutely is not!). The Club does have lace supplies, including bobbins, available for loan to newbies, but we will not be able to access those supplies until our regular club meetings start up again in the Fall. Unfortunately there are no local lace suppliers, and the suppliers do send by mail rather than courier, so there may be a holdup until the Canada Post strike/lockout is over.

You could also try contacting other Lower Mainland clubs, like Abbey Hill Lacemakers in Abbotsford.

  3. Sue – One more thought – try contacting the local lace teachers. I know the New School of Lace does have some supplies for sale, but those might be more for wire lace than for fibre lace. Still, it can’t hurt to try.
